Online Ancient Coin Buying Tips For Beginners

Claudia Bravo

Ancient coins are a great place to start if you are just beginning your numismatics hobby. Buying online is also ideal so you can find a wide range of coins that interest you. If you do decide to buy online, then there are a few tips you will need to make sure your coin purchases are smart ones.

Look For Undoctored Photographs

In the world of digital photography, everyone has a camera at their fingertips and most people have access to some basic photo editing software too. This means that photographs that you see online are rarely unedited, especially if an individual wants to make their product stand out. When a picture of an ancient coin is altered, especially when the contrast is increased, you may get the impression that a coin is in better condition than it really is. Specifically, the coin will appear more detailed or sharper. When it comes to the condition of an ancient coin, more detail will increase the merits of it and elevate its grade by a number of points. This can seemingly raise a coin from a good to a fine rating and make you think the coin is worth more than it is.

Many ancient coin sellers are not out to trick individuals, but they simply have not mastered macro photography. Blurred pictures are then altered. You can identify these pictures fairly easily through investigation. A picture with elevated contrast will appear with a background with bands of colors or bleeding hues. These colors may appear pixelated or blocky around the edges. An undoctored photo will have a background that is a single flat color, and most often it will be white. Also, the coin will appear with a pink or reddish blur or hue around the edges. This will make the photograph lighting appear unnatural, so look for even and yellow-tinted shadowing around the coin instead. Looking at an undoctored photograph will help you to understand exactly what you are buying, so your monetary investment is a sound one.

Do Not Look For Perfection

While a coin that is sharp and detailed will be worth more than one that is worn, you should understand that you should not look for perfection when it comes to ancient coins. Newer coins are formed from blanks with raised edges that are fed through stamps. The coins are then inspected one by one with a magnifying glass and they are moved through a mechanical sizer so that odd-shaped coins are removed. This process helps to produce coins that are standard, and it has been used for hundreds of years.

Ancient coins were constructed with dies, but they were made by hand one at a time. Molten metal was first poured into a mold to produce the blank. The blank was then placed into a die where it was hammered into the coin. The coin was then removed with tongs. The dies that were used to form the coins were created by individuals called engravers. There were many different engravers used to create images for coins, and several people often created dies for the same issue or type of coin. Some engravers were more skilled than others. This caused stylistic and detail differences from coin to coin. This means that ancient coins can vary widely. Keep this in mind when purchasing the coins, because this can cause confusion if you are comparing coins from one vendor to another that are supposed to be from the same time period.

Also, be aware that ancient coins are often quite dirty. Since there were no banks when ancient coins were created, many people buried their currency when they needed to store or hide it from invaders in the region. The coins were left behind and found much later on. This means that the coins were exposed to the environment for hundreds of years. Cleaning is often frowned upon within the numismatic community, because chemicals and cleaning agents can ruin a coin and alter the patina. This means that you are very likely to find coins that are dirty. Keep this in mind as you look at ancient coins for sale
